Today Manuela and Damaris went out sledding with eight of Manuela’s racing dogs! The trails were pretty good. Now we’re tuning up the sleds and packing the trails!

This is Francis (left) and Peggy (right)! They just visited us here at Muktuk. Peggy lives in Vancouver and Francis traveled all the way from Taipei, Taiwan! They came up to Whitehorse to see the northern lights (a lifelong dream for both) but were greeted by snow and cloudy skies. On a whim, they hopped on an ATV training run with guide Becca. After learning to harness, booty and water dogs, they spent a little time warming up inside next to our new stove. These two women really fell in love with retiree Stanley… (though it’s kind of hard not to).

This is Brandy. She is our oldest dog (at fifteen) and unlike some of our other retirees, she would stay outside all day and night if she could. She has adopted one of our storage sheds as her home and curls up in a ball on a bed of straw for much of the day. She loves to go for strolls near our gazebo, and though she may seem like a loner, she really loves cuddles. Brandy ran in many Yukon Quests with Frank and even conceived Dancer and Flint during the Quest of 2000 (a very happy accident).

Caught in the act! Oh, Dancer.

Throwback! This is Sprocket with pups Boober, Mokey, Red, Gobo and Wembley. They are now 19-months-old! Boober is in Manuela’s racing team, while the other pups are training for day trips.

What an exciting week here at Muktuk! Manuela went out on her first training camping trip… and two nights later, so did our guides! It’s finally starting to cool off and the snow is absolutely beautiful. With the river freezing up, we are getting prepared for sledding. This means we’ve got the snowmobiles in for a tune-up and we’re focusing on training. Winter has come!

3 centimeters of fresh snow last night! (Photos care of Merlot and Cookie.)

Spot is a camping dog. And he would like you to give him a scratch.

This is Jacob. He has a barrelhouse and can often be seen relaxing while sprawled across it. He is two-years-old and still loves to chew anything he can get his paws on. Over the summer Jacob realized that he had a beautiful tail and that by chewing off Falcon and Shelby’s tails he could have the most majestic tail in the yard. Ouch!
